The IRO SE Area ran this first careers development workshop following numerous requests from delegates who asked for support and advice in developing their career potential within the rail industry. First Great Western provided us with their excellent facilities in their training centre at Paddington, as well as supporting the event with full refreshments throughout the day. This was greatly appreciated by both delegates and speakers and we would like to thank them for this valuable support.

The workshop session leaders, all of whom have considerable industry experience in their respective fields, presented a subject viewpoint from their own personal perspective and discussed potential development issues for delegates to consider when creating their own personal plans. Jim Newsom from Realstone Consulting presented a session on CV Advice & Interviewing Skills; Tracey Hall, who has her own coaching company, presented on coaching and mentoring skills; Sarah Kendall from Arriva presented on career planning and CPD; Chris Loder from DB UK presented on developing careers from the frontline, and Gary Mewis from RSSB presented on dealing with career challenges.

The workshop was well attended by 24 delegates, although the total would have been higher had some others been able to obtain the necessary leave from their jobs.

The IRO educational schemes were promoted at the event by John Roffey and Nigel Barber, who were on hand to provide promotional materials and advice to the group.

Following the workshop sessions the delegates were able to network and talk with the speakers and each other in an informal, friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

The day worked very well and we have received very positive feedback from delegates, speakers and the IRO representatives who attended. The SE area has already scheduled a further workshop on this subject into next year's programme of events.
