North East - Member Profile

 John Sadler

What is your current role?

I am employed as a Senior Consultant in York by Funkwerk Information Technologies, which is part of a German owned global communication technology group. My principal role within the organisation is to ensure that studies undertaken on behalf of clients meet their expectations through delivery of quality outputs that are fully supported by documented evidence. The studies generally focus on heavy, light and metro rail operations and range in scope from high level strategic studies to fully detailed service planning for submission to infrastructure providers. I also undertake product training and mentoring and coaching to customers who use Funkwerk planning software tools in their organisations.

How long have you been a member of the IRO and at what grade?

I joined the IRO in 2000 and through my experience in operational posts within British Rail and Railtrack was accepted as an Associate Member.

Why did you join the IRO?

Before 2000 there was no professional organisation within the rail industry for staff involved with the practical day to day planning and running of the operational railway. As such, there was no recognition of the wide range of operating skills that are essential to keep the railway running. Through the launch of the IRO and its objectives I saw an opportunity to both gain recognition for my operating experience and expand my experience with further development through the IRO’s educational programme.

Are you involved in any Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the IRO? If so, which programme / course?

I applied for and was accepted on to the Degree course in Railway Operational Management and started my studies in October 2009. I hope that through the acquisition of the degree I will gain a broader understanding of the workings of the rail industry, in particular areas outside the conventional operations environment.

What do you hope to get from your CPD?

Studying for the IRO Degree forms an integral part of my workplace Continuous Professional Development Programme and is fully and actively supported by my employer. The support includes time off for study and underwriting course fees. On completion of the Degree, I hope to be able to benefit from my experience of the complete learning process, as well as the subject matter studied and use this in my day-to-day role at Funkwerk. Successfully obtaining the degree would also enable me to become a full Member of the IRO.

What have been the programme / course highlights to date?

Having commenced my studies in October 2009, I am still at the early stages of the Degree. One aspect of the course however that is extremely positive is the diversity of backgrounds and friendliness of my fellow students, which enhances the whole learning experience.

Do you have any plans for further study?

Because it’s been so long since I carried out any previous study, my main focus is on the successful completion of the Degree. However, I would like to investigate my options regarding further study once I have completed the course. I will need to discuss my findings with my employer and ensure any further study is integral to my workplace Continuous Professional Development Programme.
