WELCOME
Welcome to the IRO North West Area Council’s home page. We hope you find the information available here useful in finding out about what events and activities the IRO in the North West has planned in 2010 and also as an introduction to our Council members, who are here to support our members in developing their skills and experience in rail operations.
2009 was a successful year for the North West Area, with an increased number of events, increased member support and the election of an expanded Area Council, which will enable us to broaden our programme and provide greater support for the development of IRO students and members in 2010.
Special mention should go to our events co-ordinator Carl Phillips, Secretary Nigel Murphy and Tom Cox, Treasurer, for their continued support, energy and commitment, which has been invaluable in the rapid recent development of the area’s work.
We have an exciting series of visits, talks and ‘Master Classes’ planned for members and students, taking place on a monthly basis through 2010. Highlights include a talk on the Virgin High Frequency Timetable by Chris Gibb, Chief Operating Officer at Virgin Trains, an introduction to signalling control via ERTMS and visits to Newton Heath Traction Maintenance Depot, Manchester Route Operations Control and the Stockport area lever frame signal boxes. We are also planning our first overseas study tour this year, in partnership with the IRO Area Council in Ireland.
It is crucial that the IRO in the North West continues to engage with corporate and individual members and the wider rail operations industry in the area. This will enable us to run events and activities supporting the continued development of skilled and educated railway operators. The benefit being realised their own organisations and, ultimately, their customers.
The Area Council encourages members to attend events and support the Institution. If you have any ideas or comments to assist in developing the IRO in the North West, please contact us at NW@railwayoperators.org.
