Courses and membership The IRO continues to go from strength to strength, with more than 2,000 members and 146 students currently enrolled on its courses. Find out more about the IRO mentoring initiative.	Leading excellence in railway operations The IRO exists to develop and promote the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Railways. Seen as the organisation of choice for those seeking to develop their career within the rail sector, membership of the IRO also opens the door to a wealth of professional expertise, networking opportunities and access to a programme of courses, tailored specifically to the needs of the industry. Delivered in conjunction with leading education provider Glasgow Caledonian University, the IRO’s Professional Development Programme provides nationally recognised qualifications, from Certificate through to Degree level. Courses are delivered through a tried and trusted combination of distance learning and direct tutorials from leading professionals within the rail sector. Our Area Council structure gives geographical ties to the Institution plus events, talks and visits to support and promote the professional development programme. Only by working with our members, students and the wider rail community can we continually develop the courses and support required in driving forward industry standards and leading the way as custodians of best practice in rail operations.
