Continuous Professional Development

The IRO has adopted the concept of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to provide members at every level with an effective method of recording, maintaining and regularly updating details of their skills and knowledge of railway operating and the wider railway industry in general.

What is CPD?

CPD provides a systematic way of identifying, recording, maintaining, improving and developing relevant professional and work-related knowledge and skills and also developing personal attributes and skills. Both these factors impact on an individual’s ability to operate effectively, professionally and safely whatever their role or status.

CPD is intended as a tool to assist members at all levels of the IRO. The IRO’s CPD kit offers suggestions of how best to manage personal development, it is a personal thing and you are encouraged to work flexibly within the guidelines to create a planning tool that works for you and assists you in your continuing professional development.

CPD is not compulsory but members of the IRO are strongly encouraged to use it for all or any of the following:

  • Maintaining up to date and relevant professional knowledge;
  • Maintaining on going learning and development;
  • Building a profile of work, academic and professional knowledge and skills;
  • Preparing for future roles in their chosen area;
  • Progressing within the IRO;
  • Planning formal study.

What are the benefits of CPD?

CPD, although we refer to it as a process, is actually a tool for managing ongoing learning and development.
For all the learning that is obvious and formalised there is as much or maybe even more, that occurs but is not formally acknowledged or recognised by the individual themselves.

CPD is intended primarily to encourage those who commit to the process to:

  • Think;
  • Plan;
  • Do;
  • Review;
  • Learn.

in a more formalised and structured way. Thereby capturing all formal and informal learning and development that is taking place. This, in turn, fuels the  reviewing, thinking and planning stages of the process and creates a state of continuous professional development –CPD!
To reach this state, for some people, may mean operating in a different way; for others, it may only be a case of formally recording what they have always done unconsciously.

Whatever your personal position in relation to planning and actioning your development, this package will have some tools that will help. At the very least, it will give you a structure and framework to start building up your CPD record.

How can the IRO help you?

The IRO can help you with your CPD in many ways:

  • Area Group meetings;
  • Hands-on workshops;
  • Masterclasses;
  • Young Professionals;
  • Networking;
  • Study events;
  • Specific training courses;
  • University accredited Diploma and Degree courses.
