IRO Education Programme
The Programme
The IRO, in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University, offers a distance learning professional development programme relating to railway operational management. The programme is structured over three levels comprising certificate, diploma and degree.
The education programme commenced in 2005, with twenty three graduates from courses one and two graduating in July 2008. Currently there are 180 students progressing through the programme and six cohorts.
Professional qualifications recognised by industry
All three courses will give successful students a transferable academic qualification as well as the opportunity to improve their industry knowledge, which will inevitably boost career prospects.
Students successfully completing the course will be awarded a BSc, Diploma in Higher Education or a Certificate in Higher Education, respectively.
Course delivery
These courses are done by distance learning, requiring self study. All modules are web based using the GCU on line study facility (Blackboard) and are totally interactive. Students are required to manage their own study times within overall prescribed timescales and will need access to a computer with access to internet and email facilities.
The courses are divided into modules and include day study events and weekend tutorials. Each module requires students to read the core text provided referenced publications and undertake their own research. Modules are divided into a number of sections each with its own set of questions. Tutors, experienced in the module concerned, are responsible for marking student answers and for providing feedback. A course mentor is also provided to help the student overcome any learning issues.

Developing professionals
In addition to obtaining a qualification (Certificate, Diploma in Higher Education or BSc), this programme will provide the opportunity for you to develop skills, plan your professional development and enhance your career within the railway industry, by providing the opportunity to gain experience which you may otherwise be unable to obtain in their workplace.
