IRO Certificate Course
THE COURSE
The Certificate level course is the first level of the IRO Professional Development Programme.
Successful completion of this course gives automatic entry onto the diploma programme, which leads on to the third level, which culminates in the award of a degree.
Students have the option to exit the programme after twelve months with the award of a Certificate in Higher Education or they can progress to the next level.
The new Certificate course covers two generic modules that are part of any certificate course and these prepare a student for the academic approaches to learning. The final module is an end of course project. These modules are delivered by tutors from Glasgow Caledonian University.

There are three specific railway modules delivered by IRO Tutors:

- Background to Railway Operations
- Management Skills on the Railway

WHO IS IT FOR?
This course is aimed at people who are fairly new to the railway industry or for those who wish to further their knowledge and academic qualifications and eventually obtain a diploma or degree in Railway Operations Management.
However there is no obligation to go beyond this certificate level.
The aim of this course is to create an understanding of some of the key basic and critical background areas of railway operations.
COURSE DELIVERY & ASSESSMENT
Each module will take 15 weeks to complete, and is run on the basis of distance learning, which means home study.
The course is run over twelve months are students are required to study two modules consecutively.
In order to obtain a certificate all the modules must be completed.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are minimum qualifications necessary to enter this course.
However, Glasgow Caledonian University will also consider non-standard qualifications or Recognition of Prior Learning as equivalent to the above as long as these can be evidenced. For further details see Application Process.
The minimum qualification entry requirements are:
- 3 GCE AS level passes plus 2 GCSEs at grade C or above
- 5 Passes in Scottish Certificate of Education, of which 3 are at Higher level and 2 at Standard Grade 3 or above or 4 passes of which all are at Higher level.
- A Group Award at Higher level
- Irish leaving Certificate 5 passes at Grade C or better at Higher level
- Pass in approved Access Course
- GSVQ/GNVQ level 3
- SVQ/NVQ level 3
FEES
Course fee for 2011 is £4,400 exclusive of VAT.
COURSE COMMENCEMENT
The next certificate course will commence in October 2012.
HOW TO APPLY
In order to undertake the course students must have membership to the IRO. Students may be covered by their corporate membership, but are required to complete a membership application form as an affiliate member.
