Background to Railway Operations

This module will cover the elements which form some of the background to railway operations, in particular train planning, customer service and the railway business organisation.

Greater understanding in these areas should be supported by the work students do on the Basic Railway Operations module and prove very useful when undertaking the work based learning project at the end of the course.

Syllabus

During this module students will cover to varying degrees the following:

  • What is a railway?
  • Train Planning
  • Performance Management
  • Customer Service
  • The railway business organisation

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the origin of the railways and evaluate reasons for their growth
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of Train Planning and Performance Management to a successful railway operation
  • Evaluate ways by which railway operations seek to deliver good customer service to their customers
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the British and Irish railway organisations and evaluate why the different approaches have developed
