Basic Railway Operations
This module will cover some of the basic elements of railway operations, in particular signalling, the Driver’s perspective on operations and infrastructure features.
Greater understanding in these areas should be supported by the work students do on the Background to Railway Operations module and prove very useful when students undertake the work based learning project at the end of the course.
This module is taken in parallel with the Background to Railway Operations module and complements some of the historical and structural context of railway operations covered in that module.
Syllabus
During this module students will cover to varying degrees the following:
- Block Signalling
- The track
- Electrified railway systems
- From the cab and lineside features
- Engineering work
- Level Crossings
- Yard, depot and station operations
- Trains
- Publications
- When things go wrong
- Communication and control
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of railway signalling
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of other railway operating principles and of the key elements of railway infrastructure
- Evaluate the different types of trains and the reasons for these differences
- Consider the ways in which railway operations are controlled and managed
