Management Skills on the Railway

This module will introduce some of the core management skills required to manage on the railway and will endeavour to contextualise them to this unique environment.

Greater understanding in these areas should be supported by exposure to the management roles within the student’s own organisation and also within the wider rail industry. Undoubtedly it will also aid the student’s development to network with other managers/rail professionals and also to discuss management aspects with managers from other industry sectors.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the core management skills required in the rail industry, including general management principles, management processes, organisational culture, organisational structure, financial processes, people management, health and safety and project management
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of business planning and using resources to meet the plan
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of managing resources to deliver to business needs
  • Demonstrate an ability to reflect, review and plan your own core management skills development
