IRO Diploma Course
THE COURSE
The Diploma level course is the intermediate level of the IRO Professional Development Programme.
Successful completion of this course gives automatic entry onto the degree programme and provides eligibility for Associate Membership of the Institution,
Students have the option to exit the programme with the award of a Diploma in Higher Education or they can progress to the next level.
WHO IS IT FOR?
This course is aimed at people who wish to understand the fundamental principles of railway operations and further their knowledge and academic qualifications and eventually obtain a diploma or degree in Railway Operations Management.
However there is no obligation to go beyond this diploma level.
The course provides:
- A flexible and practical approach to studying and understanding of how working railways operate.
- A learning platform from which to enhance your career path in the railway industry.
- A recognised qualification both within and outside the railway industry.

COURSE DELIVERY & ASSESSMENT
The course is divided into eight modules. The first and final modules are delivered by lecturers from Glasgow Caledonian University.
The modules are:
- Personal and Professional Development through Work-based Learning
- Railway Operating Principles
- Customer Service
- Managing People
- Train Planning and Performance management (Part 1)
- Safety Law and Management (Part 1)
- Railway Business Organisation
- Integrated Work Based Project
Each module will take 12 weeks to complete, and is run on the basis of distance learning, which means home study. In order to obtain a diploma all the modules must be completed.
Candidates are required to undertake study of supplied materials, additional recommended reading and research, analysis of case studies and project work. It is estimated that at least seven hours study per week will be required during the year. Students are expected to complete the course within 23 months.
There are no formal examinations, assessment is based on course and project work. Students are required to deliver an end of course presentation to tutors on their work based project.
TUTORS
Each of the railway related modules have been written and developed by experienced managers in that particular field. Tutors designated to mark and provide feedback on each module are also highly experienced and have been accredited by GCU.
All students and tutors are supported by GCU throughout the programme.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are minimum qualifications necessary to enter this course.
However, Glasgow Caledonian University will also consider non-standard qualifications or Recognition of Prior Learning as equivalent to the above as long as these can be evidenced.
Other qualifications, experience or evidence of prior learning which demonstrate that the applicant possesses appropriate knowledge and skill equivalent to the specified entrance requirements, or can be deemed to have a reasonable expectation of fulfilling the objectives of the programme, may be accepted for admission. Alternative routes to admission
The University will consider admission to an appropriate point in a programme of study with credit on the basis of prior learning and/or prior experiential learning. Such learning may be certificated or un-certificated.
Application through the Prior Learning Process will enable prospective students to gain sufficient credits to bypass the certificate level.
CANDIDATES MUST DEMONSTRATE AND QUANTIFY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREAS COVERED BY THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME.
This is a significant piece of work which must be completed to the satisfaction of the university before applicants can commence the course. Similarly, diploma applicants without entry qualifications will be asked to submit this paper.
Alternatively, applicants may take the certificate course and if successful, would gain automatic entry onto the diploma course. The final decision regarding acceptance onto any level of the programme rests with the university.
The minimum qualification entry requirements are:
- 5 passes in the Scottish Certificate of Education of which:
- 2 are at Advanced Higher level 5
- 2 GCE A level passes plus 2 GCSEs at Grade C (or above)5
- Cert. HE
- HNC

COURSE COMMENCEMENT
The next diploma course will commence in October 2010.
