Managing People

This module provides critical accounts of the essential processes and procedures for managing people in an organisation supported by appropriate analysis of historical, theoretical and legislative data. It encourages students to research Human resource Management and People Management issues in an organization within the UK rail industry.

Module Syllabus

During this module students will cover the following syllabus:

  • The principles of Managing People
  • Recruitment and Selection – the recruitment process, assessment centres, criteria based interviewing
  • Developing People – competencies, capabilities and behaviours, training and training needs, coaching and mentoring • Motivation Theories
  • Managing Performance – performance appraisal, career development
  • Leadership Styles
  • Employee Relations – employment law, discipline and grievance
  • Team Working
  • Learning and Development

Module Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential processes and procedures for managing people in an organization in relation to recruitment, selection and induction.
  2. Analyse the theories, approaches and skills associated with managing individuals and teams in relation to motivation, teambuilding, coaching, mentoring, giving feedback, negotiating and competency.
  3. Evaluate the importance of employee relations as evidenced by Health and Safety discipline, grievance and employment law within the rail industry in historical and legislative teams.
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of training needs analysis and performance appraisals in the rail industry.
