Safety Law & Management 1

This module will introduce students to the fundamentals of safety management. The objectives of this module are:

  • To give students a brief history of railway safety law
  • To outline safety legislation
  • To consider the role of Health and Safety representatives
  • To provide an introduction to risk management
  • To introduce students to safety management systems
  • To describe Railway Group Standards.

Module Syllabus

During this module students will cover the following syllabus:

  • safety on the railway
  • statute versus common law
  • general health and safety legislation
  • duties of the employer
  • approved codes of practice
  • safety regulations
  • risk assessment
  • rights, responsibilities and functions of health and safety representatives
  • qualitative and quantitative risk management
  • review, management and renewal
  • safety policy review of safety management systems Railway Group Standards

Module Learning Outcomes

  1. On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the operation of the railway within the structure of current safety law;
  3. Evaluate the relationship between licensing and safety legislation;
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of qualitative and quantitative risk, safety management systems, and the principles of check and audit.
  5. Evaluate the need for company’s and industry-wide safety standards.
