Membership

Membership is open to anyone working in, or associated with, any part of the railway industry worldwide, who is already involved in the operations profession.  It is also open to people outside the industry who wish to prepare for a career in it.

Our current membership is drawn from a wide range of companies including freight and passenger operators, light rail and metro/urban systems, rolling stock and infrastructure providers, infrastructure renewal and maintenance companies and heritage railways, as well as the monitoring, regulatory, consumer, and safety bodies/authorities.

Affiliate Membership is open to any person employed in, or associated with, the railway industry and who is already involved in the operations profession or wishes to prepare for a career in it.

Associateship, Full Membership
Promotion to these higher grades is open to all, depending upon their qualifications, which they will have acquired by completing the appropriate education programmes offered by the Institution, or by demonstrating extensive and broad experience in the field.

Associates and full Members may use the initials AIRO and MIRO after their name, respectively.

Fellowships
These  are awarded by the Institution for notable services to operations and may not be applied for.

Student Membership
was launched on 1st May 2007 and is open to those aged 18 + and still in full-time education.

The Institution has a thriving Young Professionals group which is for members of all grades aged under 35.

The Institution is dedicated to applying procedures for membership of the Institution which are open, transparent and proactive to the industry’s needs.

Membership Fees

Membership fees in 2009/2010 are as follows:

Student £10.00 per annum
Affiliate £30.00 per annum - No cost if your company is a corporate member*
Associate £40.00 per annum - No cost if your company is a corporate member*
Member £70.00 per annum
Fellow £100.00 per annum

*A number of companies have taken out Corporate Membership of the Institution. This means that any of their employees graded as either Affiliate or Associate do not need to pay a subscription personally; they are covered by the corporate subscription scheme.  Those interested should still apply to the Institution to be registered and receive the benefits.

Members, Students and Fellows are not covered by Corporate Membership schemes and will be asked for an annual subscription.

Payment of subscriptions may be made by cheque, standing order, or by most internet banking and telephone banking systems. It is also possible for companies to pay subscriptions by BACS transfer. Full details can be obtained by enquiry to:
