Grades of Membership
Applications for membership must be made on The Institution of Railway Operators Application Form (photocopies are acceptable). All applications must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae which supports and exemplifies the experience set out on the form. Guidance notes on how to complete the application form, and how to apply, are attached to the form in each case, as are details of how to apply for an upgrade.
Student:
Available to full-time students at school, college or University, who may be considering a career in the railway industry. Participation is permitted from age 18, but younger applicants may be admitted to membership at the discretion of the Institution. Student members will transfer to Affiliate grade upon their appointment to a full-time post in the railway industry. Application form (PDF)
Affiliate:
Available to railway industry employees or those connected with, or interested in, the profession who wish to improve their competence and/or prepare for career enhancement. You need to complete the Affiliate Membership Application Form, and should please attach your c.v. Application form (PDF)
Associate:
Successful completion of the Diploma Course of Study.
OR
At least three years’ relevant railway operating experience with evidence of working in roles requiring the application of the following knowledge:
- Railway operating principles
- Customer service
- Managing people
- Basic Train Planning and performance management
- Basic safety law and management
- Railway business organisation
You need to complete the Associate Membership application form and attach your c.v. and other supporting documentation. Application form (PDF)
Member:
Successful completion of the B.Sc. Degree Course of Study.
OR
At least five years’ relevant railway operating experience with evidence of working in roles requiring the application of the knowledge required for Associate above and the following knowledge:
- Managing passenger and freight operations
- Advanced safety law and management
- Advanced Train Planning and performance management
- Train movement control systems
- Emergency planning and mishap management and investigation
- Railway engineering
- Railway economics
You need to complete the Full Membership application form and attach your c.v. and other supporting documentation. Application form (PDF)
Fellow:
An operations specialist who has held a senior responsible position for a period of at least seven years and has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the field of operations and its development. This level of membership is offered to individuals at the discretion of the Institution’s Board and, as such, cannot be applied for.
From time to time the Board awards Honorary Fellowships to the Institution. This will be in recognition of an outstanding contribution made to the Institution itself, or on the basis of eminence in a field of professional activity relevant to IRO interests. Again, these cannot be applied for.
