Background

For many years, most of the professional disciplines necessary for running a railway industry or business have been adequately catered for by specific institutions, with the exception of operational management. The engineering disciplines, for example, by specific railway engineering institutions. These bodies have enabled the exchange of technical information, provided a forum for discussion, and promoted the training and professional development of their members.

However, there has been no similar body for those engaged in the operation of railways. The Institution of Railway Operators provides just this. Privatisation and the evolution of new industry structures have delivered exciting opportunities for career advancement. However, it has also created unique challenges which the IRO can help individuals and organisations overcome. The Institution can provide:

• The opportunity for individuals to plan their professional development and gain experience which they may otherwise be unable to obtain in their workplace.
• Skills development opportunities and access to education programmes to enable individuals to develop all round competency in the theory and practice of railway operations.
• A network of industry professionals committed to mutual learning and personal development.

The Institution provides a focus for raising standards and enhancing the professional standing of those directly involved in the safe and reliable operation of railways. In addition, it provides a nationally recognised and transferable qualification for all its members.
