The modern railway demands the highest standards of professionalism. Ever increasing competitive pressures to achieve unquestioned world class performance are bringing renewed emphasis on the need for professional development on the part of practitioners of all disciplines. The professional institutions have a responsibility to respond to this need in a co-ordinated manner and indeed play a vital role in the development of all the disciplines involved.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Railway Division
The Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)
The Permanent Way Institution (PWI)
The Railway Civil Engineers Association (RCEA)
The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO)
The specific aims and objectives of the Railway Engineers Forum are:
• To bring together the particular skills and strengths of the participating institutions.
• To facilitate a co-ordinated and unified yet independent non political source of expertise in the field of railway engineering.
• To provide and publicise a co-ordinated programme of events and joint ventures.
• Where realistic and appropriate, to provide a common voice on railway topics and co-ordinated responses to requests for professional comment in the railway field.
