Education Programme

Foundation, Diploma and Degree courses
The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO) offers a Degree and a Diploma in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). Students successfully completing the course will be awarded a B.Sc. or a Diploma in Higher Education, respectively. We are pleased to announce that a new certificate/foundation level course will also be available from October 2008. Successful completion of this new course will enable students to enter the diploma programme without any further qualification.

These are all distance learning courses, requiring self study and access to a computer with internet facilities.

Successful students on these courses will now be able to demonstrate transferable academic achievement as well as industry knowledge as they develop their career opportunities.

All modules are web based using GCU’s Blackboard system and are totally interactive. Students are required to manage their own study times within overall prescribed timescales and will need access to a computer with e-mail facilities.

Each module requires students to read the text provided, referenced publications and undertake their own research. Each module is divided into a number of sections each with its own set of questions. Tutors, experienced in the module concerned, are responsible for marking student answers and for providing feedback. A course mentor is also provided to help the student overcome any learning issues.

Other Education Programmes
The Institution also offers professional development programmes on a periodic basis. For example, courses are offered for Train Planners and those interested in developing their understanding of the subject. The programmes consist of four days of classroom based training with practical exercises included. This is backed up by workplace assignments. These and other professional development courses will be offered on an ad hoc basis.

We are also able to offer bespoke training packages for companies and individual learners.
