Mike Hill writes: “The SE area has operated a number of visits during the last few years and would now appreciate your views, as a member, on what you would like to visit in 2008. North East Area
The North East Area of The Institution of Railway Operators is pleased to announce a new season of talks and visits. It is our aim to make the talks as diverse and informative as possible as well as providing interactive experiences.
Wednesday 9th July Hull Trains - First in Open Access Operation. A Talk by Mark Leving, Managing Director, Hull Trains. The IRO North East Area is pleased to announce the next event of its 2008 Programme. We have arranged a talk by Mark Leving, Managing Director Hull Trains, the first Open Access Operator on the UK Rail Network. The objective of the event is to gain an insight into the setting up Open Access Operations, current operations, rolling stock and future expansion plans by Hull Trains. The talk will also cover the relationship with Network Rail. All are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. 17:30 for 17:45, The Studio, Platform 9, York Station.

North West Area
Please note it is the intention to arrange the IRO North West Area Family Day Out for Saturday 5th July 2008. The intention is to visit the Talyllyn Railway, Mid-Wales, and precise details re. timetable of events for the day will be communicated to all N.W. members nearer the time. Wednesday 10th September Midlands Launch Event: GM Rail will host a hands-on event at the Rugby Rail Engineering School, where attendees will be able to learn how to use signalling and other equipment on real sections of track. (Rugby, 17.30).
Monday 6th October A joint visit with the IRO Midlands Area to the modern Bombardier Central Rivers Depot, which maintains the Voyager fleet (Burton-on-Trent, time TBC).
Tuesday 7th October NR New Measurement Train ride A look at how Network Rail record the condition of track and overhead lines, then how the data is captured and used to maintain the railway. Depart Crewe station circa 16:40 one way only those attending make their own way back to Crewe.

Monday 1st December A talk by Ross Spicer, Production Director of Virgin Trains, about his ten-year involvement with the Pendolino fleet and the 2009 timetable. (Birmingham, 17.30).

Young Professionals announce a new events programme

Monday 14th July Ian Yeowart, Managing Director of Grand Central will be talking to the Young Professionals about Grand Central's operations, the issues which delayed the launch of services, problems which had to be overcome in the first few days of service and future plans for expansion. You are then invited to stay for the main IRO talk by Robbie Burns of Network Rail on the subject of Crossrail. This talk will take place at the Union Jack Club at the usual start time of 16:30 for 17:00. Although places for this talk are not limited please register at www.iroyoungprofessionals.org.uk to confirm your attendance.
